Binary Pulsar Observations and their Importance for Fundamental Physics and Astrophysics

Prof. Dr. Michael Kramer, Invited Balzan Lecture on 50 Years of Binary Pulsars, Paris, France:

Binary pulsars were discovered 50 years ago, providing first evidence for a number of strong-field gravity effects, in particular the existence of gravitational waves. Today, nearly 300 binary pulsars are known, including the famous double pulsar, which is the most precise laboratory for strong-field gravity known. It’s gravitational wave test is 1000 times better than possible with LIGO. This talk summarises the current state of art and the amazing opportunities that come with timing binary pulsars.
