On August 12, 2026, during the nationwide LONG NIGHT OF ASTRONOMY, the Public Observatory of Cologne will be offering:
- Safe LIVE observation of the major partial solar eclipse (80%) using telescopes equipped with protective filters.
- Simultaneous views in white light of the Sun’s surface and in red light of the ionized hydrogen in the Sun’s atmosphere. The observation will also be supported by digital “SmartScopes” and guest viewing glasses.
Additional program:
- Projection of the eclipse’s progression on a screen
- The CCAT submillimeter telescope in Chile (guest presentation by SFB1601 at the University of Cologne)
- Building your own simple spectrometer (guest presentation by SFB1601 at the University of Cologne)
- Additional hands-on astrophysics experiments (guest presentation by SFB1601 at the University of Cologne)
