Nacht der Technik 2026

Von Quantencomputern bis zu fernen Galaxien – Forschung der Zukunft an der Universität zu Köln

Join the Clusters of Excellence ML4Q and DYNAVERSE for an interactive journey through quantum mechanics, supercomputing, and the engineering of massive space telescopes.

This year, the ML4Q and DYNAVERSE Clusters of Excellence are jointly organizing the Night of Technology, offering exciting insights into the world of quantum mechanics, modern supercomputers, and large astronomical telescopes. Discover how quantum physics is changing our view of reality, why supercomputers are indispensable for research, and how telescopes are built to peer into the universe.

Get your ticket at Westticket and using the Techniknacht code on your ticket, you can reserve spots for our events.

Exhibition

Technology and Universe Exhibition

19:00 – 22:00

Look forward to exciting insights into current research and technology topics. Discover our CCAT model made from LEGO, which clearly explains complex science, and experience an immersive film about the CCAT project using VR glasses. You’ll also be thrilled by our 3D printing activity “Print your own telescope,” where technology invites you to get hands-on. The program is complemented by a film from the new Cluster of Excellence Dynaverse, as well as a film on laboratory astrophysics, which offer fascinating insights into the exploration of the universe.

Featured Talks

19:00 – 20:00

Quantum Mechanics and Reality
[DE]

Classical physics provides us with clear answers – quantum physics raises new questions. In this lecture, you will learn why some events are fundamentally unpredictable and why observations in the quantum world mean more than just taking measurements.

20:00 – 21:00

Warum brauchen wir Hochleistungsrechner? Von der Simulation zur integrierten KI (Dr. Andreas Lintermann) [DE]

Since the first computer systems were put into operation, progress in the field of simulation science has been unstoppable.
As in other disciplines, AI is playing an increasingly important role here.
This presentation highlights the latest and most exciting developments in high-performance computing and explains how simulations work,
what they are capable of today, how they benefit from AI, and what opportunities this opens up for the future of research.

21:00 – 22:00

Astronomische Teleskope: Was? Wie? Wofür? (Prof. Dr. Lucas Labadie)
[DE]

Whether on the ground or in space, telescopes and their instruments are indispensable tools for exploring the universe and collecting radiation from distant objects.
But they are complex machines that must be adapted to a wide range of challenging conditions. I’ll take you on a short journey where you can learn more about these giants of the sky – from their construction to their unique capabilities of their instruments.

Laboratory Tour

Exploring the Nanoscale- Tour of the Topological Matter

19:00 + 20:00 (45 minutes slots)

The tour showcases key equipment and laboratories for researching quantum phenomena at the nanoscale. Participants will have the opportunity to visit the Topological Materials Lab and use a scanning electron microscope to find out which is smaller: their own hair or a quantum chip?
