What a blast! – Nacht der Technik 2026

Under the theme “From quantum computers to distant galaxies – Science of the future at the University of Cologne” the two Clusters of Excellence Dynaverse and ML4Q jointly organized this year’s Nacht der Technik at the physics institute.

WELCOME

We are proud to announce that 60 people took part on our exhibition exploring the world of quantum mechanics, modern supercomputers, and large astronomical telescopes.

As part of Nacht der Technik, there was an exhibition, three presentations by representatives from Dynaverse and ML4Q, and a guided tour of the Topological Materials Lab, including a hands-on experiment with an electron microscope to determine which is smaller: a strand of hair or a quantum chip/transistor (psst, it’s the chip).

EXHIBITION

Our exhibition featured a LEGO model and a VR tour of the CCAT Observatory, which is currently under construction in Chile. Visitors were able to have their own telescope 3D-printed as a souvenir and explore the fascinating world of astrophysics in a short film. The exhibition concluded with a video presentation on Dynaverse’s mission and vision.

TALKS

Quantum Mechanics and Reality

Prof. David Gross, ML4Q, introduced new questions arising from quantum mechanics and explained why observations in the quantum world mean more than just taking measurements. Buckle up for a journey into the unpredictable.

Why Do We Need High-Performance Computers?

Dr. Andreas Lintermann, Dynaverse, highlighted the latest and most exciting developments in high-performance computing.

Astronomical Telescopes: What? How? Why?

Prof. Lucas Labadie, Dynaverse, took us of from the small to the large scales of our universe and explained how we can observe them with modern technology.
