First CrossTalk: What causes Fast Radio Bursts in distant galaxies?

The first Dynaverse CrossTalk brought together two research groups from across the Dynaverse network. Focusing on Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs), Dr. Laura Spitler from the Lise Meitner Research Group at the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy met with the Data Science & Language Technologies group, led by Prof. Lucie Flek at the University of Bonn.

Dr. Spitler’s talk provided an accessible introduction to Fast Radio Bursts, followed by a more technical overview of her group’s work on repeating FRBs. After summarising our current understanding of these repeaters, Dr. Spitler highlighted the promise of new datasets that will become available as the next generation of instruments (e.g. the Deep Synoptic Array) become operational. The talk ended with a few ideas on using natural language processing tools to efficiently interact with these rich datasets, and members of the two groups will follow this thread in the coming months. The talk was attended by around 25 researchers, including members of Prof. Dr. Flek’s group, as well as scientists across the cluster.

About Dynaverse CrossTalks

CrossTalks is a cluster-wide initiative designed to foster scientific exchange, lower interdisciplinary barriers, and connect research groups across the Dynaverse network. Every CrossTalk brings researchers from one working group into the regular meeting or seminar of another. Speakers deliver a short, accessible presentation introducing their methodologies, datasets, and scientific questions. The goal is to build mutual understanding, highlight shared technical challenges – such as machine learning applications or data pipelines – and spark new collaborations across subfields.
